Whats up y'all
Another good week, time just seems to fly by though. I don't know what it is but it seems like Monday is always rolling around. The Honolulu zone has district meeting at the tab Tuesday mornings, but I am in Hon-West so we meet at our stake center by the likelike. The package came on Saturday, good idea about not sending sparklers. I am not sure what plans will be for the 4th, Last year was it was on my 1st Monday in Hawaii and we just had all day Pday. I assume this year we will just have to be as a zone after 5 or so so my vote would be to camp out at the Pearl Ridge elders pad and watch the fireworks from there. It is on the 11th floor and overlooks Pearl Harbor and that so I assume we should be able to see some. Hope the 4th goes well for everyone else. Anyone planning on racing? Good to hear about your trip Mom and Dad sounded like fun.
Tuesday was kind of a crazy day. The 4 assistants just showed up at the end of District meeting and wanted to go on splits so we took Elder Maybon with us. I replaced him on Molokai so we had a good time talking about that and all the good times. The day was kinda a drag though we decided to go see everyone on the unbaptized member list, but only found one house with anyone home and it wasn't who we were looking for so that was kinda a bummer. It happens sometimes though.
Wednesday we had an opportunity to go do some service at Pearl Harbor on the Uss Missouri. That was a lot of fun I thought. My crew was assigned to work in the teak shop sanding down pieces of wood so they could make them look nice and sell them on plaques. Not the funnest service possible but it was a good time. I guess the Honolulu zones get to go every transfer and do some service. Good ones include getting to sweep all the stairwells even in the restricted sections, or getting to polish the desk where the Japanese surrendered. Some examples of no so good service is licking sealing and stamping envelopes or scraping old junk off the decks. Anyway it was cool because lots of ships were coming into the harbor and the crew was standing all around the ship in there whites which was pretty cool. That afternoon Elder King had a doctors appointment which took a few hours. We did manage to find a new investigator Wednesday night which was solid. She has member relatives (seems like every Samoan does) and wanted to feed us this week so we will go back then. She seems more solid than a lot of our other ones we visit. The biggest concern we seem to be running into is that Samoan Culture, they feel is that everyone should go to church, but it doesn't matter which one. Lots of people like to tell us. "We go to Church, You go to Church, We worship god and so do you so we will all see each other in heaven." but we are working with them and trying to help them see the Authority our Church has. The plus side is everyone is usually happy to have us in for a few minutes and I don't feel unsafe walking around in all the government housing we visit because they respect us as messengers of God.
Thursday we tried to get our area book more organized and looked through lots of old progress records to see if we could find anyone the missionaries had been teaching a lot that we didn't know about. We found one but she has moved and no one knows where so that was a bummer a little. On the plus side we found another new investigator at KPT. She is a very nice lady who told us if she wasn't catholic she would be Mormon so we will see how that goes as well. If there was a negative to the visit, it was that we found her at 5 and had dinner at 6 and of course she fed me until I was about to burst. We took a 20 minute rest and then repeated the process at 6. My pants still fit though. :)
Friday Elder King had a district leader meeting, so I went and hung out with the other district leader companions for the morning, They are both Tongans from West Valley. Anyway the 3 of us went to grab some McDonald's for breakfast and found a Tongan who wanted to know a little more about the gospel so we shared a little with him over breakfast, I didn't say much because a lot of the conversation was in Tongan which isn't as close to Samoan as I would have thought, and I'm not a pro at listening to Samoan either, although this week I noticed some improvement in my comprehension of reading the Samoan Book of Mormon and listening in YSA class. Friday night we went to a graduation party for our ward mission leader's grand daughter. They sure treat us well at these sorts of things. They have us sit at the head table and make sure we get food right after Bishop and his wife. You have to be careful because if you turn your head for too long your plate magically refills itself.
Saturday I got a special assignment to go on an exchange with an Elder who is having a little bit of a hard time. I guess he struggles with stress and trying too hard to follow the spirit. It was a little bit rough He is notorious for walking on the way to an appointment and then having a "prompting" that we should not go to that house and go to another one clear on the other side of the area, or that after talking to someone on the street, as we walk away he wants to go back and share more or bear another testimony. He really is a good elder and wants to do his best I just tried to help him see that our plans we make the night before are inspired and prompting won't feel good and then 10 minutes later feel bad. It was an experience none the less and I think i learned somethings myself from it.
Yesterday we found another good investigator. We found them right before church and invited them to come and they did. :) She is the grandma of some kids who just got baptized even though their parents aren't members. It was a cool experience for sure and we have an appointment tomorrow with her so I am really excited for that. Another nonmember came to church with a friend so that was cool. Things are starting to fall into place I believe. YSA was good I enjoy that class. We got a dinner drop off at the church and then it was time to call in numbers wrapping up the week.
Hope everyone has a great week I love you all Happy 4th of July. I have now been in Hawaii a little more than a year. Time just flies I guess. Can't wait to hear from you next week. Manuila le Aso ( have a good day) I love you all!
Love, Elder Tripp
